Today I woke up thinking I don't really feel like teaching again. I have other things to do... like cleaning, hanging on the laptop, checking emails, laundry, and just doing nothing sounds good. But believe it or not, the kids were actually excited to "have school". In fact, even before I woke up, the kids were on the laptops doing their computer work. All 3 of them completed a level in Click N Read already. So...I made a trip to Starbucks for a Chai Tea Latte and decided to get started.
I had a fun day planned. We started out with our math board. Z played with Tangrams and made pictures while K and G worked on the math board with me. Then they were happy to know that I was going to read them a book. They got comfy on the couch with their blankets while I read them a new book I had titled Lots and Lots of Coins.
It was a great book with tons of information and history of coins. We got out some coins and looked at the pictures, the dates, and anything else we could find. K went and got some of his coins that he had been collecting. He had coins from Haiti, Italy, Tanzania, and Mexico. He was pretty excited. Then I told them that we were going to the bank to see if we could find half dollars or golden dollar coins. Each kid got a half dollar and a golden dollar and K and G also got a $2.00 bill! They are not going to spend these but put them in a safe place!
After eating at Subway across the street we drove over to a little mini-mart to see what they could buy with 2 quarters, 2 dimes, 2 nickels, and 2 pennies = $.82. Well, there wasn't much to buy for less than a dollar so G had the great idea of putting their money together and then sharing. They finally agreed on 1 thing. What a great lesson for the kids today! Eventhough we just did math today I feel like they really grasped the idea, learned a lot of history, saw it firsthand, and experienced it while enjoying their candy! = SUCCESSFUL DAY!
